RL Winston Company - Twin Bridges, MT

http://winstonrods.com/Just a quick story about equipment. I bought a 4 piece, 5 weight travel fly rod from RL Winston a few years back because I had owned 2 piece versions in the past it would fit nicely in the Fishpond travel case my wife had given me for my birthday. I had found their rods to be reasonably priced and very dependable. As a matter of fact, over the years, I had found myself using their rods more than my Sage, Orvis, St. Croix and Scott rods. I even have a Winston 14' spey, but I haven't quite figured out how to use it well yet.

Anyway, to the point of my post. Like any normal fool, I broke the tip section a couple of weeks ago. The specifics of the break are not important, but suffice it to say I was stupid. ALL Idaho fly fishers have done this before. So I emailed Winston, and they gave me instructions as to what to do. On a Friday I boxed up the entire rod and took it to FedEx. The next Tuesday, I received notice the rod was received. The rod with new tip was back to me by that next Friday. Hey, that's only 8 days! I fished with the rod the following Tuesday. I do not believe you would receive that kind of service from any the other fly rod companies listed above. As a matter of fact, I know first hand it is usually closer to a month. For me, that is 1/4 TH of my ENTIRE trout fishing season.

I had actually broken one of their rods once before and had a similar experience. That particular time I was close to my annual trip from eastern WA to the Big Horn River in south central Montana. So, I decided to personally take the rod to Winston in Twin Bridges, MT. (See Below). They have a very nice, fairly small facility on the north side of town only about 30 minutes north of I-90. Go visit them on your next trip fly fishing in Montana and while you are there, you might as well spend the night and fish the Jefferson River. I did just that and had a great time. Even caught some trout.

RL Winston is a truly GREAT fly rod company with wonderful service and a very courteous and friendly staff. Try one of their rods. You will not be disappointed.
