Fly Line Care

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysThis post is written for all Idaho fly fishers who can't figure out how to keep their floating lines afloat. If you take the time to read about fly line history, there has been a myriad of fly lines developed over the eons. Basically the original fly lines were braided silk placed over braided thread. The would usually being to sink after 2-3 hours, so fishers would need 2 or 3 spool changes each day. The lines were then dried and the lightly coated with the premier floatant of that time period--Red (label) Mucilin. Then the entire process was redone the next day. I would almost bet that animal lard has also been used in days past to "dress" floating fly line.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysWARNING: Do not use any dressing/floatant, that contains silicone, on any silk fly line! First the silk fly line must be dry before applying either Red Mucilin or Thebaults dressing. It doesn't require a lot of dressing but the dressing must cover the entire surface. SILK LINES ARE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT MONSTER--THEY MUST HAVE A COATING AT ALL TIMES OTHERWISE THEY DRY OUT AND BREAK. Do not use silicon on silk lines.

In the early 1950's fly lines approached those of today. A synthetic, non-porous outer shell over a braided thread. The types, weights, lengths, colors and tapers of today began their infancy. Needless to say, there are so many choices now available, we may have to write an entire book to discuss them all. But basically, there are sinking and floating; tapered and weight forward lines. The one thing though you can count on, they do not last forever, and should be treated with care.
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys
I do not take my line off the spool after every usage and dry. Most casts are only 30 feet, and most of the wear is in the first 5 feet. So my attention is on this first 30 feet. I simply peel off a little more than 30 feet and take a clean paper towel and liquid detergent and wipe down. Then I dry well again with second paper towel. Then I put a glob Accardo Silicone fly line conditioner or Albolene onto this same paper towel. Coat the entire 30+ feet (and leader if you like) with these and then lightly wipe clean--you want a little residual for the buoyancy. Don't leave too much for it will pick up trash on the water, then sink. Do this after every outing.
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys
Lastly, when the distal 2-3 feet begin to show wear (look for cracks when you bend the line), I simply cut it off then replace my loop, for leader attachment, with another secured by a nail knot. One can do this 2-3 times without affecting the function of the line. With a DT (double taper) line you can, after "cutting off" 2-3 times, turn it around on the reel, cut it off 2 or 3 more times and essentially double the life expectancy. DT line is the kind I like for this very reason. My lines last several years using these methods, and they are quite expensive.

Why DT and not WF (weight forward) floating line? Purely and simply for the above reasons. You might be able to throw you line a few feet further, but in most rivers, this makes no difference. And for the doubling of life expectancy, it is definitely worth buying the DT.

Bent rods, screaming reels and perfect line loops to you all.

Hemingway's Idaho

In the introduction to “Idaho River Maps & Fishing Guide” by Greg Thomas and Gary Lewis the following is written:

"In 1939, on a warm day in autumn, Ernest Hemingway stood in the cemetery in Ketchum, Idaho and read aloud.
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys“He loved the warm sun of summer and the high-mountain meadows, the trails through the timber and the sudden clear blue of the lakes. He loved the hills in the winter when the snow comes,” Hemingway said.
“Best of all he loved the fall…the fall with the tawny and grey, the leaves yellow on the cottonwoods, leaves floating on the trout streams and above the hills the high blue windless skies. He love to shoot, he loved to ride and he loved to fish.”
The occasion was a funeral for a friend, Gene Van Guilder, a publicist for the Sun Valley Resort. The eulogy was written not only for Van Guilder but for Hemingway himself and all of us who love the high rugged country and the rivers of Idaho in all their seasons.
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysWith more than 25,000 miles of creeks and rivers within her borders, Idaho can lay claim to some of the most challenging whitewater in North America and the best blue-ribbon trout fishing. Anglers come from all over the world to tempt cutthroat to the fly, steelhead in big brawling rivers, sturgeon from the depths and smallmouth in swift current.
Close to two-thirds of the state’s land mass is owned by all Americans in common, in federal land, parks, national forests and wilderness. Idaho has more wilderness than any state in the lower 48 and anglers can find really good fishing here year-round.
Some of the most rugged country in the lower 48 is found within her borders."
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysSome years back I was fortunate enough to attend a social function at Ernest Hemingway’s modest Idaho home located just off the Big Wood River north of Ketchum Idaho. It was simple, peaceful and plain. It was the perfect place for him to collect his thoughts and write. I sat there thinking in envy of how fortunate Hemingway was to be able to work in such beautiful setting.
It is winter now in Idaho, so the snow and cold are prohibitive to fly fishing. So I read. After a hour or two of looking at hatches, knots, flies and equipment the other evening, I have decided this next summer will be definitely filled with more Idaho fly fishing. Simply take a look at some of my earlier posts and you'll understand-->America's Awesome Idaho

We are at 9 for sure and I know of at least two others thinking about it and checking their schedules. Father / son team. I am not bringing raft because mostly a wade area. Vehicle more important. But I am bringing a pontoon and so is Kevin. Paul and Mike T floating one day and so are Devon L and Harold. I will probably float along side. Personally I would like to try the north fork north of Avery at least one day. Kevin wants to go up high to the east toward Montana.

Paul text the other day and said he had taken care of one cabin for two. Spoke with Larry yesterday and he and Duane are probably going to camp. Larry has two large tents which will sleep at least 3 in each and my RV will sleep 3+. Kevin said something about camping as well but my guess is he may go up high. Would like to centralize meals around Avery that way group can float (usually below), fish north fork to north and go up high to east during days. Could get another cabin if necessary. Please communicate amongst yourselves.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysPaul has again volunteered to cook if we all pitch in. Will be stopping in Spokane, Coeur d'Alene or St. Maries for groceries on the way out. Kevin and I will be driving in. We will be bringing pontoons and RV and perhaps two vehicles. We can meet air travelers and help with groceries when going through CDA. Paul, Mike and Harold I believe will be renting small car (summer so don't need 4x4) at airport and driving over. Larry and Duane will be driving over. Should have plenty of vehicles to access wade spots. This is a very long river with multiple wading access points. Kevin likes to play Grizzly Adams and hike way up.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysAll in all, should be a fun and relatively inexpensive outing.

Hard takes, tight lines, bent rods, screaming reels and make sure your hiking/wading boots are fitting properly.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysWritten by Greg Thomas and Gary Lewis and published by Frank Amato this is a really good guide to many of the famous rivers in Idaho in 2015. There are 30 sections of very famous western & Idaho fly fishing rivers discussed here. For example the St. Joe has 2 sections discussed in 4 pages.

This short book also has launch points, camping areas, hatch charts, easy to follow driving instructions and some wonderful photos. There are several short paragraphs about area establishments and attractions in each section, with Idaho fly fishing hints and comments as well.

Thus my motivation for this purchase. It cost, by the way, $24.95 at my local farm, home and sporting goods store. I have also seen this on Amazon, since my purchase, for around $20 including shipping.

I have been to "the Joe" as it is called by locals on several occasions since it is only located a few hours from my home. It really is a great western fly fishing river with sometimes large catches of cutthroat. The fish are generally in the 10-12 inch range. The one pictured here, and frequently used as a blog header, was about 16" and caught in late July on a yellow/orange Stimulator.

A quote in the book by Joe Roope, who runs the Castaway Fly Fishing shop in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho is most appropriate. Wait until you visit and take in the wilderness surrounding the river. It is most impressive.

By the way, if you need flies to take with you to "the Joe", look at the hatch chart above, then go to Big Y Flies. Their flies are quite durable and inexpensive. And for the perfect "Joe" rod, try out their 9 foot Nano. I have one and I must say, it is one of my favorites and perfect for the St. Joe. Big Y also has frequent sales. Get on their mailing list. It is definitely worth it.

Hard takes, tight lines, come and join us on "the Joe".

PS - We also have an IDFFA trip planned to the Missouri in September. This is such a GREAT BOOK, I plan on buying a "Montana River Maps & Fishing Guide 2015" also published by Frank Amato. See Amazon for this publication as well. It will also cost around $20 including shipping.

St. Joe up high - No pressure
Well, it's January 14th and time to begin thinking about Idaho fly fishing for trout. We at the IDFFA have two great trips planned this year. One to the St. Joe in August and one to the Missouri in late September. Granted the St. Joe is in Idaho, but the Missouri begins in Montana and ends, I believe some 3,600 miles later, by dumping into the Mississippi River in St. Louis in Missouri. Err the name. So one is in Montana and not Idaho--no one is perfect. Our members like diversity.

Missouri River Montana Butte
August on the Joe should be great! Snow melt will be gone and the water still cold. The cutthroat trout are always ravenous and will bite almost anything. One does need to "match the hatch" when one is happening, but otherwise try a Stimulator, YSF Stinger, Adams or Purple Haze.

Now September on the Missouri may be different. The cooler mornings may be a stimulation to those big browns to begin their pre-spawn feed. My suspicion is larger fish down deep so my pick for flies will be streamers. That is a YSF Assam (in dark brown or olive), large Montana Stonefly Nymphs (dark or golden), large Montana Sparrows, large Wooly Buggers, large Skunk Hair Caddis and perhaps even (that time of year) large Wooly Worms will be the ticket for those large brown. Really, don't forget Wooly Worms on the Missouri in September.

Why don't you come and join the IDFFA for some great western fly fishing. I believe the Missouri trip is full but not yet the Joe. You could always get onto the alternate list for the Missouri though. There are always some last minute cancellations. Hard takes, tight lines, bent rods and screaming reels to you all.

Ode to our "Little Boy" (11/26/07-1/8/16)

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys

This post is not about Idaho fly fishing. It is about the heartbreak my wife & I encountered these past few days. See about 9+ years back we found this little buff colored Pomeranian at what we called a "puppy mill". More commonly these are known as mall type pet stores. The little thing was very sick, weighed maybe a pound and someone had deliberately broken his little tail so it would curl more and he would look "prettier".

THE REAL KING
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysWell, we rescued him, spent some money getting him healthy, spent 6 months housebreaking him and with only an occasional well dog visit to the vet. Now in return for all of this energy, effort and money the only thing we got in return was a total unconditional love from this little creature that never weighed over 12-13 pounds. BOY did he rule our family for all those years.

His name was Bosley. Bosley? Well that doesn't sound very regal, so we added a few middle names. Ultimately he became known as Sir Bosley Winston Churchill. The name suited him for he had this uncanny ability to rule all those around him. My wife, daughters and nieces literally carried him everywhere. He would not walk on anything but carpet. He demanded the "pack", being my wife and I and other dogs all be in the bed together by dark each night. My wife literally hand fed him each morning. Whenever the other dogs needed to go out, he would let you know. BOY WAS HE SMART!
fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys
Well little Bosley developed a terminal heart problem last summer and he lasted about 7 more wonderful months with a great quality of life. Unfortunately we had to treat his heart failure with a medication that ultimately killed his kidneys. But he had a great life for a few months more. Other than loosing my mother and father, thus far in my life, euthanizing my animals has been the most difficult thing. And I am always there to hold them through every second. Tough! Boy I'll say! Very tearful!

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysThere are many deserving animals out there. They are willing to give to you everything in return for a very small amount of caring, food and support. I simply do not understand how people can think dogs are evil and unclean. Heck, I know plenty of people more unclean than dogs. Go out there and adopt one. You will not be disappointed.

Carpe diem and hug you family including your pets often.

Why FISHBOOK Exists?

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysReceived this last night from one of our crazy IDFFA member. This time of year one has to do something other than think Idaho fly fishing. So here goes:

"For those of my generation who do not and cannot comprehend why Facebook exists:

Since I am not on Facebook - I try to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.  So---I walk down the street and tell passersby what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later, and with whom. I give them pictures of my family, my neighbor's dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch, and everything everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up" and tell them I like them. And it works just like Facebook.  I already have four people following me:  two police officers, a private investigator, and a psychiatrist."

Idaho Fly Fishing Association - IT'S FREE!

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys
The Idaho Fly Fishers Associaton began with our 1st group trip to the Big Horn in 2012. As you will notice, there were 8 of us (pictured below right).

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysAn ugly bunch, I agree, but a nicer group of guys you will never meet. Some members have now come and gone, but of these original 8, six are still very active and attend our meetings every year.

The IDFFA (Idaho Fly Fishers Association) is a word of mouth organization and has been mostly formed by friends of friends. At least we all have the same passion for Idaho Fly Fishing. We hale from Idaho, Louisiana, Florida, Washington, Kansas, Missouri, California via Idaho, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and soon most of the other states. Our organization has now grown to 26 members mostly through the efforts of our newly appointed social director Kevin (Shotgun) from Oklahoma. Kevin is not only social director, but poker director as well.

Membership in the IDFFA is FREE for now, and eligibility into our organization is as follows:
1/ A passion for Idaho fly fishing is a must.
2/ Must be a male between 30 & 89 (Our wives and girlfriends insist, however female attendance is tolerated with advanced notice). Females potentially interested in joining, see #9 below.
3/ Means to be able to attend one annual Idaho fly fishing adventure to the tune of approximately $1,500-$2,000 per year. This usually includes guide, food, transportation and housing.
4/ A poker passion (current members are an exception if you can cook) and the means to loose up to $100 per nightly session.
5/ A real love for a really good homemade or store bought sour mash.
6/ Good enough health to be propped upright in the middle of a river or drift boat.
7/ A UN / PW for Famous-Smoke.com.
8/ A referral from an existing member or very famous person of good character--good luck with this one!
9/ We might consider female affiliates with prior group approval--but most really would prefer not to join once they see the composition of the organization. Most members are ONLY good for Idaho fly fishing and really nothing else.

Happy New Year to ALL.

Larry J's birthday is the 4th. Wish him well. He really needs it.

Speaking of, we are up to our knees in snow in Idaho. Time to begin thinking about warmer weather (19 degrees outside right now with 18" of snow on the ground) and fly fishing.

Spoke with Kevin before Christmas. Another friend of my brother is coming so there now may be NO beds left in the three adjacent cabins we have rented. Fishers now total 18 I think. BETTER ACT SOON! Apparently there are some  close houses available thru VRBO for stragglers--RONNIE AND CALEB. There may also be some single rooms within 10 miles. So contact Kevin for specifics (aky1214@aol.com).

Kevin told me that Brad from the guide service is still reserving half boat days for each fisher--can pair up later. So contact Brad at Crosscurrents guiding ASAP for guide boat arrangements. Remember this is the September 22-24 Missouri River, Montana trip.

This adventure is a little less complicated but considerably more remote than the Missouri trip. This trip cannot fill up if fishers can find accommodations in or close to Avery, ID. There is also streamside camping available for the more adventuresome. No guides involved unless desired--mostly wade fishing. Now we're up to 8-10 or more--I have lost count. (SEE BELOW)

It is also my understanding that there are more beds for perhaps less $ at Scheffy's Motel in Avery as well. To be honest I have never stayed or fished in Avery, but I have fished about an hour upstream from there--really good cutthroat! There is a possibility Larry J might consider camping above or in Avery, so touch base with him and see what holds if desired. Also, Larry has a couple of guide sons that might consider guiding there. Paul S. and Mike (Paul's brother-in-law) will be floating down below Avery with ROW Adventures on the 18th. Harold S. and Devon L. may float one day as well. ROW contact: Row office (208-770-2517) / E-mail Ryan Moore (fishing manager) at ROW. I don't know what they charge. The only fishing report I can find is at this Facebook page for the Idaho Fly Fishing Company, which is not often updated. The Idaho Fly Fishing Company (208-245-1052) is the only fly shop of which I am aware located in Avery--might also try them for guide boat. I am not positive about the phone and cannot find a website.
