Spring Cutthroat Fly - YSF Stinger

Spring is here for the Idaho fly fisher. Try out this guy for some great times. Fish on top or strip down for a very effective shallow streamer pattern. The fish love it. And for easy wings that float like a charm for your Stinger, go to "Hot Wings".

The simple "YSF Stinger" is written and tied by YellowStoneFly for the Idaho Fly Fishers blog. The fly was designed because most hoppers and stoneflies are difficult to tie, primarily because of the addition of legs. The hackle here subs for the legs and looks very real to the trout. The YSF is very easy to tie and can be completed in only minutes. An array of colors can be used and I like sizes 6-10 on a long shank hook. The Krystal Flash adds to the visibility. This is a great Idaho fly fishing bug which should produce well for anyone particularly in the spring, summer and fall months.

Now tie in some good hackle. Rust used here.

Add foam. This is roughly 1/4" wide with a tail section.

Save Belize's Fishing Grounds and Marine Life

"Leonardo DiCaprio wants to turn a beautiful piece of Belize and its surrounding waters into an exclusive resort for the wealthy.  He plans to violate key provisions of Belizean law by building overwater structures in a newly expanded conservation zone, as well as by restricting public access despite the "Queen's Land" rule. The area in which he plans to build overwater structures is part of a conservation zone designated to protect fly-fishing species and their nursing grounds. To allow those overwater structures is not just a violation of Belizean law, but is an infringement on the livelihood of fly-fishermen and tour guides who have used the area for decades. Please sign our petition to protect the environment at Blackadore Caye and the rights of local fishermen." By Change.org and from a good Idaho (now Montana) fly fishing friend.

Bull River Montana Means HOGS

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysThe Bull River near Libby, MT means really large cutthroat and brown trout. Once the snow melts and the river begins to recede, look out. Take your 9 foot, 5 weight fly rod out and some sort of floating vessel and you will have success. Simply put, GO GET THE BULL. Not quite Idaho fly fishing, but you cannot get any closer and not be in Idaho.

I do not know what the ideal cfs flow rate is for this river but, if the rain stops, there should be excellent fishing soon. This is great Montana fly fishing. You will not find a more beautiful high mountain valley anywhere and it is right smack in the middle of the Cabinet Mountain range. For directions go to blog post "The Bull River, Montana" or send me a note or comment for more specific directions if needed.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysIn the spring, I would try a Brown Drake (absolutely the best Bull dry), Clouser minnow or black/olive wooly bugger. Sometimes golden stones and large hare's ear nymphs will bring success as well. Whatever you fish make it big. A little flash would not hurt either. There really are some large bulls, browns and cutthroats in this river. Make sure you do not keep the bulls. Oh yeah, it is a new year so do not forget your 2011 Montana fishing license. There is a C-store approximately 3 miles east of the river on Montana highway 200 that sells licenses. Out-of-state licenses are now $70 for the year.

So why does a north Idaho fly fishing nut enjoy the Bull River? As I have already mentioned, the scenery is incredible! The area I like to fish is from the canoe access at milepost 11.5 down to the ramp (I use that term loosely but you can get a trailer in with only modest difficulty) at the 8 mile bridge. Do try fishing near the bridge for I have seen some hogs beneath it. This is a very easy, relaxing float that takes 4-5 hours and you have basically few rapids to fight. If you need a shuttle or a guide for the day, try Dave Blackburn at the Kootenai Angler or the Kootenai River Outfitters located at the north end of highway 56. They are great people and very knowledgeable about the local waters.

If you want to make your visit into a few days or an entire week, talk with these guys about the Kootenai, the Moyie and the Clark Fork. All of these rivers are within an hour or two of the Bull. Another really good, but wade fishing only river, is the Thompson River. It is only a stone's throw of the Bull just east of Thompson Falls, MT.

Moyie River Bridge

Most of this post is from the article "Moyie River Bridge" from HighestBridges.com. I have been over this bridge many times on my way to a secret spot on the Moyie River and to float the Idaho portion of the Kootenai. It is located in Moyie Springs, ID and is quite the sight.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys

PS-My secret spot is exposed on the Moyie River link above. Do not go during high water. Too dangerous to cross.

Vital statistics from the above article are as follow:

"464 feet high / 141 meters high
377 foot span / 115 meter span
(Year Built) 1964"

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys
"One of the highest deck truss bridges in the world, the Moyie River bridge is located just south of the Canadian border in the U.S. state of Idaho. Far less known than the Perrine bridge in Idaho Falls, the Moyie crossing is nearly as high at 464 feet (141 meters). Constructed in 1964, the current span bypassed more than a mile of twisting road that descended to the bottom of the canyon where it crossed a bridge built in 1923. The MoyieRiver begins in British Columbia, Canada and flows into the Kootenai before meeting the Columbia River which empties into the Pacific Ocean.
Supporting the 3-span truss are two concrete piers with 3 levels of varying thickness. The tallest of the two piers measures 217 feet (66 meters) from foundation to cap. The bridge measures 1,233 feet (373 meters) from end to end. On the east side of the bridge there is a parking area where you can walk out onto the bridge. The more adventurous can try to view the structure from a road that descends to the river from the west side."

There are a lot of small brookies in the Moyie, but be aware there are some really nice bow and cutties as well.

Visit the Moyie River the next time you visit the northwest. It is beautiful and well worth the trip.
