Continental Divide for Trout

Cutthroat Byway

Recent email from IDFFA member and fly fishing friend Larry the Pilgrim. Enjoy

This creek divides the US connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysThe Panama Canal is not the only water line connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. There's a place in Wyoming—deep in the Teton Wilderness Area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest—in which a creek splits in two. Like the canal, this creek connects the two oceans dividing North America in two parts.

Yes. You read that right: North America is divided in two parts by a single water line that—no matter how hard you try not to—you will have to cross to go from North to South and vice versa.

The creek divides into two similar flows at a place called the Parting of the Waters, pictured above. To the East, the creek flows "3,488 miles (5,613 km) to the Atlantic Ocean via Atlantic Creek and the Yellowstone, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers." To the West, it flows "1,353 miles (2,177 km) to the Pacific Ocean via Pacific Creek and the Snake and Columbia Rivers."

Of course, unlike the Panama Channel, you can't navigate these waters—unless you are a fish:

At Parting of the Waters, water actually covers the Continental Divide such that a fish could safely swim from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean drainages. In fact, it is thought that this was the pass that provided the immigration route for Cutthroat Trout to migrate from the Snake River (Pacific) to Yellowstone River (Atlantic) drainages.

I don't know about you, but I find this to be pretty darn awesome!fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flys

Huge takes, tight lines, screaming reels and sore arms forever. Come and fly fish Idaho this year. Make it one of those "Bucket List" things.

Kootenai Is big boy. There Is a road down but on MT side. Don't know about fishing in that stretch but probably ok. Would need MT license there and definitely can't get to area on island (ID) where you would need to fish except by boat.

Could wade small portions of Kootenai up near dam and NF Coeur d'Alene mid-May but snow melt prohibitive in most waters.

YSF,

This is some great info and I really really appreciate you putting the time into it.  Extremely useful for the trip and I'm sure for my brother down the road.

I did have one quick question.  The area you talked about with the island just west of the Idaho line, is it possible to get down to the river from the road and simply walk the banks of any of these spots or is that part of the Kootenai mostly for floating?

Dear CA,

Mid-May fishing will probably be best on the Kootenai or Bull Rivers. I personally like the area on the Idaho portion of the Kootenai just west of the old Leonia, ID ghost town and Boulder Creek in May. There is an island just west of the Idaho line where I have caught some really good fish in the spring time on both sides and right at the point (east end) using large streamers like the YSF Assam. This is one beautiful float down to the take out at Twin Rivers Resort. The Kootenai and the Bull may be the two most scenic floats in the west.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysGuides on these two rivers are listed below:
1-Dave Blackburn at the Kootenai Angler in Libby, MT
2-Tim Linehan at Linehan Outfitting Company in Libby, MT. Tim has appeared on the History Channel series “Mountain Men”.
3-Kootenai River Outfitters just outside of Troy, MT

These guys also fish other local rivers and will let you know which, they believe, are fishing the best when you arrive. I have fished with both Blackburn and Linehan and are both really good. I have personally never fished with KRO.

Another really good guide is Randy Dingman of ROW Adventures. I have fished with Randy and he tends to fish on rivers farther to the south like the NF of the Coeur d’Alene, Spokane and St. Joe Rivers. Again 2-3 hours away. He will do his best to put you on fish.

Please realize that most western guides are purists and tend to lean more to dries. The Kootenai guys up near the Libby dam will probably try something like a large salmon fly and a chironomid dropper (called zebra midges back east) that time of year—not a bad choice and fun to fish. PS there are some very large bull trout in places on the Kootenai to be had on large streamers. Not supposed to fish for them (endangered) but some guides will.

I know this is a lot to absorb, so if you have any other questions feel free to contact me. Obviously, I love to talk fly fishing. Sorry, no really good rivers near Sandpoint in mid-May. But all of the above are within a 2-3 hour drive. Worth it!

PS—If you ever come back there are also some great rivers in British Columbia 3 hours away.

PS again--My brother form SC comes over for fishing also each year. There are some closer options once snows melt but locally go mostly with small lakes in May. Some good fish though.

Good luck. YSF

Hey YSF,
Asheville is an incredible area of NC, love it up there and I'm sure your daughters do as well.
I appreciate the thought on some options for us fly fishing out there.  My brother and his wife just had their first kid this past week and that is why we are heading out that way.  We all have fishing experience but are just now getting more into fly fishing.  Not trying to travel extremely far from Sandpoint but do want to see what some of the better options are.  If you think maybe just exploring some areas on our own without a guide then we are considering that as well since I know my brother will be looking to adventure out on his own in the future.  Just wanted the opinion from an area local like yourself.
Thanks for the help and have a great Saturday..

Hi,
My brother is new to living out in Sandpoint and my mother and I are visiting him in mid May.  I wanted to get your recommendation on a guided half or full day trip around that area or nearby.  Any good guide or company that you suggest around that area?  Thank you!!!!

Fish On

Spring In Idaho

Spring has sprung in Idaho. Look at the date and then the forecast. Talked to my daughter back East last night and was 45 °F there yesterday. Here is our forecast. It is April 9th. Can you believe it? Water temp is around 45 °F as well. Almost a perfect start to the season. Come and try us out.

Plentiful sunshine. High 66F. Winds light and variable.

Cloudy skies early will become partly cloudy later in the day. High 64F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.

Time to dust off those rods and reels and try out some Idaho fly fishing NOW. I did and did well in Antelope Lake on Thursday and the Moyie River on Friday. Cutties were hungry in the lake and bows in the river. Not very large, but the numbers were good.

Come and fly fish Idaho soon.

Hard takes and tight lines. Dream of spring fly fishing.

Wolf Madness

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysYellowStoneFly has developed a new category: "Environment" (See  QuickView Blog Post Retrieval). What is "madness"? As per Wikipedia madness is "Insanity, a severe mental disorder." Within the last two years the moose, elk herds and many of the whitetail deer have all but disappeared from our state. The moose are all but gone. The deer numbers have decreased. Elk herds are still here, but their numbers are significantly down and they stay down low in the valleys all year.

Why? Rumor has it that "problem" wolves have been imported from areas such as Yellowstone Park and now they are proliferating. They now kill for fun and not food. They are even killing livestock and horses. Small children and domestic pets may be next. Their numbers must be culled.

Who am I to say that if you accidentally shoot (while protecting yourself of course) a wolf with a low caliber bullet in the gut that it will not be here tomorrow to kill and harass. The pack will make sure it disappears. They will eat their own. You know blogs are supposed to be controversial. Let us know what you think about these beautiful yet menacing creatures. Should we continue to allow this insanity?

Come and fly fish Idaho soon.

Hard takes, tight lines and screaming reels to all our Idaho Fly Fishing Fanatics.
