Best Nymph I Have Ever Used!

The Black Crawler is effective and easy to tie. I am now tying this fly thinner than pictured here but I always weight.
I have read "Larger Trout for the Western Fly Fisherman" by Charles E. Brooks (1921-1986) copyright 1970 and found it to be most informative. Charlie Brooks was a noted fly fisher who lived and fished after retirement in and around Yellowstone National Park. Amazingly, he observed some amazing stuff from ABOVE the surface on streams in the park like the Fire Hole in the 60's. Researching the feeding habits and living habitats of large trout was his thing.

Charlie suggested: WEIGHTED flies, "dead drifts" and NO indicators equated to larger fish but fewer hook ups. Fish the rapids or calmer waters deep (4-5 feet) where there is structure. Sandy, gravel bottoms were generally not good unless there was adjacent submerged structure or cut banks. Tippet size didn't matter. The best flies were those which look the same from EVERY angle. He fished 95% of the time with weighted Montana Stone Nymphs, the old Wooly Worms, ASSAM DRAGONS (never heard of before now) and Skunk Hair Caddis deep below surface. Maybe this is why the Wooly Bugger (the same on all sides) is so effective. On top he fished Montana Stone Adult (similar to a Stimulator w/ yellow and orange). All of these were in large sizes #2-#8. Larger and smaller sizes were not as effective for the sizable trout.
