Email to IDFFA Participants on the St. Joe River Trip - August

Dear All,

Summer is here. Fly fishing has begun now that the waters have somewhat receded. Spent a few days last week on the St. Joe. More on that later. Our Joe trip is coming up in August and for all the dates are arriving Wednesday 8/17, fish 8/18-8/20 and depart on Sunday 8/21.

I have down sized and can only now sleep 2. I was wondering if you would bring yours to the Joe for additional sleeping? If you can please email Jody for a spot at jody@cabinsbythejoe.com. Her mobile is 425-773-3724. Thanks.

Kevin Y. & Larry G. – Stayed in Avery one night then drove up to Spruce Tree. It is about 42 miles, but at least 1 ¼ – 1 ½ hours each way. Since you guys are camping on the upper Joe, please do not feel obligated to visit the group in Avery. We’ll miss you poker loses, but we will be fine. It is a very long way. If you do come though, please let me know what night so Paul can plan meals accordingly. Thanks.

If you guys want to stay the entire time on the upper Joe, we all will certainly understand. Ditto the Kevin Young & Larry Gill paragraph above. Thanks.

Paul S. – We are looking forward to seeing you and still do not have an exact head count for meals. Will let you know when Larry G., Kevin Y., Larry J. and Duane G. respond. Looks like at least 7 daily. Groceries can be purchased in St. Maries unless you want something exotic. PS – Scheffy’s in Avery does serve breakfast and burgers, fried fish and chicken for dinner. Thanks.

Hope to meet you then.

The trip to Avery from the Spokane airport is about 135 miles and 2 ¾ hours. The Cabins by the Joe in Avery are located about 47 miles and 1 hour from St. Maries. Cabins and campsites are on the river and all adequate but not fancy. It is my understanding that no commercial fishing boats can launch above Avery but do frequently leave from there. So Harold, Devon, Paul and Mike you need to check with your outfitters and see exactly what they have planned.

On my way up, I did see multiple areas of good cutthroat waters with turn outs above MP 55 (only 8 miles above Avery). I also took about a 10 minute trip up the North Fork of the St. Joe, which dumps into the main Joe at Avery. I did not go far and it is quite a gorge, but up higher there probably are some access points, for I know people do fish it.

The Idaho Fly Fishing Company in Avery does have a Facebook page, but I cannot find a website. The guy there was very helpful and he has a lot of stuff.

For those interested, here is the latest St. Joe River Fishing Report I could find. The Joe is single barbless hook, catch and release only!

Did not fish in Avery – it was very hot. Above Fly Flat though did pretty well. Large orange salmon flies were frequent. The occasional Caddis and one evening there was a really good Yellow Sallie hatch. My most successful fly was the YSF Stinger and in August, I would definitely bring some yellow/orange Stimulators. The YSF Stinger caught a 16” cutty, but most were 10’-12”. Oh also, a really neat fishing guide is "Idaho River Maps & Fishing Guide 2015". You can purchase from Amazon for about $25.

See everyone soon. PS – IF Dan R. (ID) emails, he is our newest member and is planning to come to the Joe in August. Looking for fishing friends. JC
