Kevin (Shotgun) IDFFA Member on the Moyie
I and two of my friends were considering a trip for a week of fishing on the Moyie. I grew up in Wallace, Idaho but had never heard of the Moyie until this last spring. Since none of us has any experience with the river/area any advice on where to fish and camp would be appreciated if we were to go. We all flyfish and practice catch and release. We have been told that there is a grizzly problem and was wondering if this is true as it has spooked one of my friends if that is the case.  Also we would be wade fishing and was told the river is a tough one to do this on.

Any information you could relay to me would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance and ‘Tight Lines’ to you,

DryFlyGuy

Moyie River just below the Shoot

I have never seen a grizzly, but they are there. Lots of blacks though. Bring bear spray and a .45 cal or better sidearm. You sound like my kind of guy "dryflyguy@charter.net" though.

In the Moyie River area either Meadow Creek Campground (primitive state campground half-way down from Canada) or Twin Rivers Canyon Resort (much less remote and less primitive and at the confluence of the Moyie and Kootenai) would be the only 2 campground of which I have knowledge. There is one a little further east at the mouth of the Yaak River and several in and around Libby, MT.

The Moyie really can ONLY be wade fished in the summer and it can be tough. PS-evenings can be good on Kootenai with dries just above Twin Rivers. It is wade able. Also, Rex at Twin rivers will rent you a raft and shuttle you up to Leonia at state line. Really good island just west of ramp and island is in Idaho. This is one beautiful float!

Southerly View of Moyie from my Campsite
I was up there just yesterday. water is warming. Water comes over top of spillway in Moyie, BC so warms in summer. Definitely need to stay south of Meadow Creek in summer. There are a couple of good spots near Moyie Springs in summer though. For my money would fish either south or Kootenai or Bull. No wading on the Bull though.

If you guys make an annual summer trip consider joining the Idaho Fly Fishers Association. No fees except poker at night. We always make a couple of summer trips to usually different places. Good guys from all over the country. We smoke, drink and tell each other lies. For other questions, email me any time.
