Fly Fishing Terrorism

Who says satire is dead. The following event is based on a true life story. The names have been obviously changed, but the events are real.

Idaho fly fishing news flash: “At approximately 10 pm PDST in the panhandle of Idaho on a nameless river, a fifteen inch rainbow trout was caught, foul hooked and died. The fish was rushed to the local hatchery and immediately resuscitated, but to no avail. Despite all efforts, this trout, which was supposed to be released, expired. As a side, authorities have now identified some 8 other victims as well. All have now succumbed in a similar manner. Could these events have been prevented?"

Now here is the pisser. Local wildlife law enforcement is not admitting to this event nor confirming the known number of victims. They have stated that they suspect trout fishing terrorism, but will not yet confirm. Authorities state that it could easily be a year before confirming that this is truly a fishing terrorist act and even then the news will be placed on page 105 of the evening paper and at the bottom and in very small print. Should the story even make the local TV news, it will be glossed over in only a 5 second flash—the national news, forget it!

Now also get this, the victim was caught on a red San Juan worm tied by the suspected terrorist on a #8 Mustad hook. Embossed in obviously very small print on the hook was the serial #8593940. The local authorities have called in the FBI, but all seem to be dragging their feet. A little bit of investigation would have shown that this instrument of death had been purchased in a local fly fishing shop in Ponderay, ID.

Now can you believe they even found out the purchaser’s name though a credit card trace. It just so happened it was one of group of 4 fishers passing through from unknown parts for a few days of supposed recreational fishing. This was obviously a cover, for they were really here to inflict unmitigated terror into the local river's trout population. The perpetrators’ names are being withheld, but all have the initials “AM”. All other info is on hold by the authorities, but our sources state that all 4 are radicals and have been on a watch list for some time.

It does not take a rocket scientist to see this is definitely a case of fly fishing terrorism. Why authorities have taken so much time to admit this and arrest those responsible is absolutely beyond my simple mind’s ability to comprehend. Maybe next time the system will move much quicker – but I really doubt it.

Hard takes, tight lines and happy Idaho fly fishing.
