Feed the Fisherman

I was actually thinking of dinner this evening and one of my favorites for winter crossed my mind. The post is a product review, which I do not often do, so read carefully.

I discovered a couple of years ago an incredible soup mix. They are produced by a company which I believe is located in Rome, GA and are very easy, nutritious and filling. The package says they will feed 8, but when I open one, I usually divide into 4 servings and place each into a sandwich baggie. Depending on which you kind you choose, there are, without extras 300-400 calories per double serving. For certain ones, all you need add is water. Suggestion is 8 oz per serving. So for my double serving it would be 16 oz. PS-I usually add about 50% more.

For my soup dinners, I usually add a couple of ounces of browned ground beef or pork sausage, and about a 1/4 cup of additional uncooked rice. An ounce or two of milk is also added when I remember. Add a pinch of flour to help thicken and you have quite a meal. Garlic and pepper to taste as well will help--I use crushed red pepper for extra pizzazz.

I place all ingredients into a stove top skillet and put on low medium heat. Bring to a slow simmer and cook about 20-30 minutes stirring occasionally. Serve immediately or place in a thermos for use on the water or in the duck blind later. Also add a toasted bagel with a little cream cheese as an additional filler. This is really good stuff and everyone should try. Multiple retail stores are now carrying these, but you'll pay a little more.

Costs about $5 per bag, which easily feeds 4, and can be ordered online with little or no shipping fee at Shore Lunch.com. This is a freeze died product, so I suspect will last for years in their pre-packaged airtight mylar bags. Keep the Idaho Fly Fisher's belly full.

Hard takes, tight lines and full bellies to all.

Conservative Idaho Fly Fishing

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysWhat does it mean to be a conservative Idaho Fly Fisher? Do you vote Republican? Particularly now that the party is officially dead. Does it mean that you partake in "Free Speech", particularly now that control of the internet has been turned over totally to the UN. Just today, Julian Assange was completely blocked out of internet usage yet we still allow ISIS to place online whatever propaganda it wants. Who is doing these things?

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysDid you know that Russia has recalled ALL of its citizens back to the "Motherland"? Yemen is firing on our ships in the Straight of Hormuz. We are about to elect a possibly less than honest politician President again rather than one that uses the "P" word behind closed doors--oh I forgot, there are no more closed closet doors. And one of my favorites, look at all of the anti-smoking commercials on TV. Where are the anti-heroin, marijuana, oral prescription narcotic messages? I supposed, the networks would rather you use your drugs than smoke cigarettes. I know someone of means would rather sell to you medication for "OIC" ("Opioid Induced Constipation") than have you break any of these habits for they would loose money, and lots of it.

Oh yeah, did you also know that the 2nd Amendment is now also dead. By electing our current slate of proposed officers, no one will be able to protect themselves from hoodlums unless they are a member of the politically elite and have more money than God. Oh that's right, there are no more politically elite. Ha! And if you do have money and belong to the Bilderberg Group, not to worry, for nothing applies to you. You have the best health insurance, best weapons with which you can defend yourself and the safest home that lies behind at least a 20 foot wall with turrets and guards for protection.

fly fish Idaho; flies fishing; fly fishing; fly fishing equipment; fishing flies; fishing gear; trout flies; salmon flies; fly fishing Idaho; flies for sale; Idaho fly fishing; flyfishing flies; fishing flysGas is $2.50 per gallon, wages are completely flat, and even if you are employed, your chances of getting ahead with all the debt are slim and none. The stock market is completely rigged and there is no reason to take your cell off of "Location On", for everyone knows exactly where you are anyway. Oh, oh, oh! The consumer price index is hopping for it accounts for absolutely NOTHING that consumers care about. And, by the way, the unemployment rate is extremely low and the underemployed numbers mean absolutely nothing since the government says so.

Democracy is dead and we now live in a Totalitarian country. Tomorrow is another day and it should certainly be interesting. I have seen so much occur in my country in my lifetime, it is scary. I fear for my children and grandchildren. God bless American and I do pray our way of life recovers, but I kind of have my doubts.

Hard takes are beginning and the lines have tightened around us. We are the fish and the government is the fisher. You can bet though, once caught we will NOT be released. Forget it. One nice thing about this blog--it is infrequently read but cathartic for author.

A total of 27 participated in the two outings. We are going to try for only two trips again in 2017, but we could need a third later in order to accommodate everyone.

Fishers were from ID, KS, PA, OK and LA. The September expedition consisted of guys from ID, KS, SC (all newbies), OK (mostly newbies), WV and MO (mostly oldies). Only two major mishaps occurred. The one on the Joe we'll call the case of the bent, cracked and sunken Kevlar canoe and the one on the Missouri was the case of the dropped overboard (not deliberately) cell phone and near drowning.

Fishing on the Missouri was better than the Joe, but good times were had by all. Consider becoming an IDFFA member and come and have some fun with the group. PS-ACT NOW, FOR THE GROUP MAY EVENTTUALLY HAVE TO CLOSE ITS MEMBERSHIP. Members will still be able to invite friends on outings, but ONLY members will have a vote in group decisions.

Check out IDFFA regularly for updates as to next year's fly fishing trips. The IDFFA is also a great way to connect with local fishers and begin to catch some big boys with a friend.

Hard takes and tight lines and enjoy the Missouri River Photos

Missouri River, MT

Buttes of the Missouri

White Pelican on the Missouri?
Missouri River Summer is brought to you by YellowStoneFly of the Idaho Fly Fishers Blog. Most Idaho fly fishers agree that the doldrums of summer can make for very hard fishing due to the increase in river water temperatures. I recently had the opportunity to visit the Missouri River tailwaters below the Canyon Ferry Dam and found the fishing to be a challenge. But the sheer beauty of this river as it flows toward Great Falls, Montana somewhat replaces the slowness in the fishing. Brandishing a float tube, I was able to fish and take in the breathtaking beauty along with the wildlife of mule deer, otters, buttes and even white pelican.

Oh so beautiful!
Did I catch fish? Well yes! They were not huge, but were feisty. If you plan a trip to this area this time of year, carry a few hopper patterns and tandem these with a bead-head pheasant tail in about the 16-18 size. You will be successful if you fish the rocky edges next to the deep water bends. After a rain, should you get some, you might swap the BH pheasant out for a cinnamon San Juan and be successful. Any way you slice it, it sure beats work!

Getting there, well it is out of the way unless you fly directly in to Great Falls. The area between Craig, MT and the dam (about 20 miles upstream) provides the coldest water in the summer for success. I-15 from the north and south, I-90 then US highway 287 from the east and US highway 200 to 287 South to I-15 from the north will get you where you want to be. Sleeping will be predominantly in either Helena or Great Falls for there are few places on the river to park at night unless you want to camp or bring your motor home. Guides can also be found in each city. For the more adventuresome, you can rent a drift boat or pontoon boat, but if you have never been on this river, I would suggest a guide.
Early bird on the Missouri

Try it out. You will not be disappointed. My Idaho/Washington friends say the spring is best, but the Missouri should be on every Idaho fly fishers "bucket list". And if you have ever seen the Missouri downstream in South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas or Missouri, you will not believe it is even the same body of water.

Happy Idaho (Montana) fly fishing! Tight lines forever.
