What will we do?

Well, winter is upon us in North Idaho. Remarkably it is still warm and the snows haven't begun yet, but the rains have come. Waters are high and cool but still fishable. Get out your neoprenes and throw a few streamers. If you do, one can catch some really good fish Idaho fly fishing this time of year. Fish the deepest holes you can find. The numbers may not be there, but the size usually makes up for it.

Now if something does restrict your ability to fish right now, like orthopedic surgery or an abdominal aneurysm, dream of fishing and tie a few flies. If you are going to be recovered in time to fish before the snows come, tie up some large streamers now.

San Juan Worm (Extra Large)
Wooly Bugger (Black, Brown or Olive BEST)
YSF Assam
YSF Salmon Slayer
 
Make sure they are BIG and are fished really slowly. Preferably on a sinking line and on the bottom. A really good way to tie these is like a Clouser Minnow with the hook up.

The Clouser Minnow
 
This will avoid so many lost flies. Just about any streamer can be tied this way. Even though really designed as a saltwater fly, the Clouser is actually a really good trout fly as well. PS again, make sure your flies are BIG and FAT this time of year. A 1-0 or #2 hook would be good, or where legal, try adding some marabou to a large hook and placing on the end of your YSF Assam. This makes a REALLY large fly that sinks like a rock with weighted line and a little lead in the body.

Remember, the bigger the better and no one really ties a "Perfect" fly.
 
Hard takes, tight lines, sore arms and good wintertime fly tying.
